Burak Arikan delves into new symphonic spaces in the city, in the way networks are built and become definitions of new meaning entities. In his work “Islam, Republic, Neoliberalism”, Burak has drawn a complex diagram that analyses the relationships established between mosques, republican monuments and shopping centres in Istanbul, as they represent the three ideologies with the greatest scope in contemporary Turkey. Beyond functioning as a simple map, its complex rhizome designs reveal the spatial patterns of these ideologies through physical relationships and representations of power. For example, this network of mosques represents the way in which the calls to prayer from more than 3,000 mosques all over the city are melded together.
