The world is experiencing an extreme urbanisation period. State control on space and time is increasingly being surpassed by the global flows of capital, goods, services, technology, communication and power. In the future, cities will represent close to 90% of the growth in the world’s population, 80% of wealth creation and 60% of total energy consumption. So-called “global cities" have a direct and tangible effect on global affairs, through more than the social economical medium, with influence in realms such as culture and politics. The largest and most interconnected cities in the world help establish world programs, and are able to deal with transnational dangers, as well as serving as global integration centres. These are the engines for growth in their countries, and provide access to the resources in their regions. The need to improve our understanding of cities is, therefore, one of the main aims of this event.
The Fair also seeks to offers cosmopolitan citizens, the true focus of these changes, a number of alternatives, solutions, infrastructures and resources. The new century has brought about a change in the current concept of citizenship and in what it means to be cosmopolitan, modifying the habits, behaviours and rites we carry out, promoting the emergence of a new globalised citizen who tries to adapt to the demands of new post-capitalist citizen practices in the 21st century. In this context, a new generation of associations, social networks, artists and small companies in the civil realm have emerged to service and respond to the demands of an increasingly global society. A social, political, economic, and cultural context which is in a permanent state of flux, and increasingly disconnected from a state that is incapable of offering an effective solution to the conflicts posed by the exercise of citizenship.
This Fair is one of the best platforms for business, the international scope of companies, commercial promotion, networking and the exchange of knowledge.
The Fair presents new social structures, artists and companies that are resisting the hypercartography of new communication and control agents; they attempt to break free from old capitalism, corporate, state nation and brand models, by creating networks of mutual dependence, solidarity, the defence of shared ideals, e.g. the environment, sustainable development, democracy; by giving priority to individuals, and promoting social equality; by offering sensitive and subjective alternatives in the face of the prevailing monitoring system and exchange models.
One of the main characteristics of the Fair is the support it provides to productive social sectors, professionals, artists, collectives and entrepreneurs. Because of this, in order to face the challenges of globalisation and prepare for the demands of the market, it combines organisational experience, innovation, technological development and competitiveness.
The Fair is the fruit of the collaboration of more than 15 companies and institutions from all over the world, with the institutional support of the Madrid City Government.
